Proximity switches affixed to pneumatic cylinders replace
externally mounted limit switches, proximity switches and other
externally mounted sensing devices used to indicate the near end
of cylinder stroke travel in either the extended or retracted
position of the cylinder piston rod. Because the customer does not
have to incur expenses to design or manufacture the brackets
necessary to mount an external switch, cost savings are usually
realized. In addition, there is no physical contact of the switch
by any moving parts of the cylinder and the switch sensing probe
is not subject to external contamination. Because of the above two
facts, these switches usually have a much longer life within the
manufacturing system where they are placed. Peninsular has
extensively tested cylinder head mounted proximity switch
technology for the American automobile industry and has a proven track record of success with the
utilization of this technology.
In-Port Cylinder Head
Mounted Proximity Switch
Technology
Only
Peninsular approved RF output proximity
switches are to be used with our cylinders;
the use of any other proximity switch , not approved by
Peninsular, will not be covered by the Peninsular cylinder warranty.
All switches capable of rotating 304° and contain a large mini
connector for cord set attachment. Cord sets are to be ordered
separately and come in various lengths - contact Peninsular.

You may configure your Peninsular cylinder with the switch mounted
to either end or both ends of our model MH heavy duty all steel
air cylinder or our model LM medium duty aluminum air cylinder.
Our model LM aluminum cylinder can be made to utilize magnetic
piston sensing as well.
RF (radio frequency) output inductive proximity switches can by
integrally mounted to Peninsular air cylinder heads here at
Peninsular's factory with the switch probe descending through the
cylinder port as a configurable option available to our customers.
Our technology allows the same switch probe length to be used at
each cylinder end without the use of shims or spacers underneath
the switch. The use of shims and spacers, a common practice in
today's cylinder industry, also increases the potential for
unreliable switch actuation and repeatability (see drawing #1 and
drawing #2 below).
In addition, we incorporate the use of only one proximity switch probe
length for 1 ½" through 3 ¼" bore sizes !
Please reference the chart below for proximity switch probe
lengths that we use on both ends or either end of
Peninsular air cylinders for bore sizes 1 ½" through 14".

Drawing #1
- Traditional Design
A Different Switch Probe Length
is often used on the Rear End Cap than on the Front End Cap because
both Piston Cushions have different Diameters. This is a Common
Practice in Today's Cylinder Industry.
Drawing #2
- Peninsular's Improved Design
The same Switch Probe Length is
used on both Peninsular Cylinder End Caps because both Precision
Machined Piston Cushion Hubs have the same Diameter and Precision Machined Cylinder End Caps
are Employed
